It was recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Majestic Theatre as part of the MTV Unplugged series of concerts and contains live, acoustic versions of the band's songs. The show first aired on MTV on May 28, 1996. The performance was Alice in Chains' first concert in two and a half years, as well as one of the band's final appearances with Layne Staley. In addition to the CD, a full length DVD of the concert was also rele. During the concert, Alice in Chains drew from their three albums and two EPs, offering new, more reflective arrangements for harder songs like Would and virtually re-creating the original versions of Got Me Wrong and No Excuses. Throughout the album, the group sounds tight and professional - on the basis of this performance, it's hard to believe that they hadn't played together for nearly three years - but it doesn't offer anything that the albums don't already. Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged was performed on 1996 at Brooklyns Academy of Music Majestic Theatre as part of MTVs unplugged series. It was their first show in three years due to Laynes drug problems. It features Scott Olson as a guitarist. It features songs from Sap, Jar of Flies, Dirt, and Alice in Chains. His torn-up vocals are the passionate lifeblood of this acoustic set, fuelling the uneasy darkness of Rooster and delivering the lonesome howl that makes this rendition of Down In a Hole unforgettable. The bands gloomy energy haunts throughout, but the skewed, dissonant grunge of the closing The Killer Is Me is especially mesmerizing and harrowing. Alice In Chains. • caif
One of my favorite albums. MOV did a good job with this issue. A must have!
  • Manesenci
Sounds absolutely fantastic. If I had a gripe I'd wish for a gatefold, but that's such a minor gripe it's barely worth mentioning. A great pressing of a classic set. Worth every penny.
  • Jwalextell
Very simple but classy packaging. Sounds absolutely great, like any other Music On Vinyl releases !
  • Tygrarad
Sounds amazing.. sound wise compete with mofi or analogue productions lps!! If you like Alice you need to get it!! 10/10
  • Qutalan
Is this pressing better than the original version from 1996?
  • Monam
For what it costs for a '96 pressing, I would just get this and enjoy the greatness of the MOV release for a fraction of the price. As someone else said below, it sounds like they're in the room with you...
  • Ferne
Sounds incredible. The reviews don't lie. This is the best sounding vinyl I own so far. Sounds like the band is in my den! It comes with 2 records jammed inside a normal sleeve; wish it was a gatefold because I always grab the wrong record first.
  • Gela
cheap jacket and packaging, however this record sounds excellent, this is my favorite AIC that MOV has repressed.
  • black coffe
The simple cover and blank white inlays doesn't suggest it, but this is an outstanding pressing that sounds simply great! I'm very surprised ... maybe the best newer pressing I have (but I have only a couple). ;) A must in any collection!
  • Phain
Just bought mine today and wow MOV has done a fantastic job yet again. Well mixed and sounds like you're in that concert with a front row seat
  • Gralsa
Wow Wow Wow Wow Wow, this pressing is one of the most brilliant i've got !!! just perfect , the bass are superb, awesome press really !!! Thanks Music On Vinyl !!!
  • Shakataxe
This pressing is unearthly, the sound is phenomenal. From the tight bass to Layne's vocals, the mix, the flat silent vinyl press. Perfect! Highly recommended.
  • Uste
Yes, its true. One of the best sounding vinyls i have. Live show at home!
  • Gavikelv
Definitely one of the best sounding pieces of vinyl I own. What a masterpiece.
  • huckman
I am led to believe that this was pressed with the original stampers. It would certainly appear so because it sounds fantastic.
  • Minnai
That comment you posted I could flip right back at you Richard. The etchings in the deadwax are totally different, you would know if you had yourself done what you told me to do, which I had done already by the way. Furthermore, and you may or may not know this, stampers are usually chucked out if unused after 5 years from the first pressing, as they will decay and become oxidized after a while. Sourcing from the original tapes doesn't mean using the same stampers. Those are two completely different stages of the record pressing process.
  • Goltizuru
How is 'I am led to believe' a 'definitive statement'?
  • Ishnjurus
You’re wrong. It is from the original EU stampers...have a look at the deadwax before you make definitive statements.
  • Grotilar
In the front cover or somewhere says it is from original tapes
  • Marirne
It wasn't, I can guarantee you that. The original stampers most likely don't even exist anymore.
  • Sarin
A gatefold jacket using the B&W group shot from the CD booklet would be icing on the cake.
  • FailCrew
Such an amazing pressing! You definitely can't go wrong with this record.
  • Browelali
I've had this record for a few months now. I have some records considered to be audiophile quality (Analog Productions, Mobile Fidelity etc.) but, I can honestly say this record possesses some of the best sound I've ever heard on any format. As many of us do, I'm always making strides towards better sound from my stereo. I'm always feeling like I'm "this" close to having the ideal setup. Listening to this pressing restored my faith in my own system. If anyone reading this is like me and puts research, money and endless effort into their stereo, pick this up and see where you're at.
  • Cildorais
Excellent sound quality with little to no surface noise. No complaints with this one at all.
  • Purestone
Do all copies have the yellow sticker stuck to the actual cover instead of to the outer sleeve?
  • LeXXXuS
I just got a copy of this album and it doesn’t have the yellow sticker at all. My copy is pressed a little off center, though.
  • Sat
This pressing does justice to the wonderful performance. It sounds superb! A must have in any collection IMO.
  • Kecq
This uses the same stampers as the original pressing.
  • Agalen
That's good to know. It sounds great and that explains why.
  • Malaris
Great press for a great album. Can't go wrong with this one. I honestly didn't know this performance could sound so good.
  • Fearlesshunter
This has been one of my favorite live performances for, like, forever, and I was beyond thrilled to be able to pick up a vinyl pressing for pretty cheap (after all discounts, I got the Music on Vinyl reissue for just $23, well below what I'd seen it for elsewhere). I don't think I have to say much about the performances; if you know Alice In Chains, and yet somehow you've never heard this performance, congratulations on waking up from your nearly 20-year coma! But if you're uninitiated: AiC's music is generally rather dark and brooding, but they do have some surprisingly upbeat, fast-paced songs (like "No Excuses"), and both types of songs work well here. Highlights, for me, include "Brother" and an absolutely haunting version of "Frogs."As I mentioned above, I have the MOV vinyl reissue. Packaging is nice and solid, but I would have loved a gatefold instead of a single sleeve (these types tend to be loser and I'm always afraid of records falling out when I slide them off my shelf). The records themselves sound fantastic; the quiet sections (like when Layne and Jerry harmonize without instruments) are awesome, and the bass and drums are sharp without and no fuzz. It's been a while since I've listened, but the between-song banter sound turned up compared to the CD version, which adds to the atmosphere.A must-have!
