The myth of a lost '70s AfrofunkAfrobeat album & the major factor of 1998 10 Songs. 10 tracks 40:42. The Daktaris, whose name means doctors in Swahili, were an Afrobeat revival group based in Brooklyn. The group no longer exists today, though some of its members have gone on to be part of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Basing its sound on the style of 1970s African musicians like Fela Kuti, The Daktaris are today known for the faked Nigerian origin of their album Soul Explosion, which included Africanized personnel names, a vintage cover, and a Produced in Nigeria label. The Daktaris' 1998 debut, Soul Explosion, is dedicated to the memory of Fela Kuti, who pretty much single-handedly invented Afro-beat. The Daktaris are clearly influenced by Fela's signature style, mixing jazz and funk riffs with the hypnotic rhythms of his native Nigeria, but their groove-oriented music is much more accessible to the novice listener than Fela's occasionally fearsome soul stew. Where Fela was heavily influenced by both psychedelia and free jazz, the Daktaris are more like the Kool & the Gang circa Jungle Boogie of Afro-beat: their music is deep. Soul Explosion CD, Album. Desco Records. DSCD 003. And this was the first hint that The Daktaris' Soul Explosion was not a reissue of some long lost Afro-beat gem but a masterfully produced recording by a contemporary band. Of course the Desco label is now well known for having attempted such deceptions. The Daktaris is an hommage to the Nigerian sound of Fela Kuti and was performed by a fledgling group that would become Antibalas. Soul Explosion, 2006. Musicawi Silt, 03:04. Musicawi Slit, Pt.
