This 1993 box set Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 1-4 should satisfy most collectors' needs, mainly because of the performances' clarity and accuracy, though some may find them to be expressively tepid and little more than technically polished run-throughs. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra obviously knows these works as well as any orchestra and certainly could play them perfectly without prodding from a conductor. Barenboim's contribution is plainly interpretative, and his readings are conservative, calm, and controlled. Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist Sample. Answer: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra The playing of this band leaves one in absolute awe at their fabulous achievement. It seems hardly possible that any group anywhere on this planet could perform as well as they do here, and they must be praised to the heavens for what they've accomplished. The sound on these cd's is excellent although SACD's would have been even more revelatory. Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68, is a symphony written by Johannes Brahms. Brahms spent at least fourteen years completing this work, whose sketches date from 1854. Brahms himself declared that the symphony, from sketches to finishing touches, took 21 years, from 1855 to 1876. The premiere of this symphony, conducted by the composer's friend Felix Otto Dessoff, occurred on 4 November 1876, in Karlsruhe, then in the Grand Duchy of Baden. A typical performance lasts between 45 and 50 minutes. Excerpt 1. Excerpt 2. Excerpt 1 II. Andante sostenuto ms. 91-105 E F. Horn 1 in E. Audio Files. Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim.
