Killing Joke is the debut studio album by English rock band Killing Joke, released on 5 October 1980 by E. It debuted at number 41 on the UK Albums Chart on 26 October 1980 and later peaked at number 39. Killing Joke was recorded in August 1980 at Marquee Studios in London, shortly after a small tour promoting the Almost Red EP. The album was self-produced by the band on purpose. They only wanted an engineer who can put their technical knowledge into what we want, the way we want it. Killing Joke 2003 - Killing Joke. For years my original experience of KJs self titled debut was backwards since a friend had rented the vinyl and we both recorded it on tape inverting sides A & B so it always began with The Wait and ended with Bloodsport. Since I was a fan of Night Time I would have expected myself not to appreciate this record but as it turned out, it always was one of my all time favorites. Killing Joke is the debut studio album by English rock band Killing Joke. It was released in August 1980 by record label E. The album's lyrics were written by frontman and vocalist Jaz Coleman, and expressed his opinions on issues such as politics, death, hypocrisy, human nature, pollution and exile. The artwork was based on a photograph by Don McCullin of young rioters trying to escape from clouds of CS gas re. Killing Joke - Killing Joke review: A post-punk masterpiece of tribal funk-rock and grinding heavy metal with suitably doom-mongering lyrics and splenetic vocals. The original album comprises of eight tracks. The three key songs are the opening grind Requiem, famously covered by Foo Fighters, the anthemic The Wait, famously covered by Metallica and the tribalistic Wardance, famously covered , it'll come to me. Apparently KJ's old management may well have been behind this, and was available from the likes of HMV. This fantastic performance, and recording, makes the band's official, 1982, live mini LP "Ha" look fairly pedestrian in comparision.

Have to agree with John_101- the release off this was odd,I too purchased it in a 'legitimate store' HMV or Andys - I think the actual release was lateish '82- the title 'the ORIGINAL KJ' indicates it was released after Raven replaced Youth as bassist...some time after the release of 'Revelations'LP (March '82?) & after Jaz had gone to Iceland(not the frozen food shop) meaning KJ appeared on bbc2s 'riverside' & 'performed' Empire Song on TOTPs with a dummy wearing a helmet in place of their missing vocalist..the mini live lp 'HA' I think was poorly received by just about everybody .i would give it a listen to confirm this but like many didn't keep the 10" 6 track release for very long ..This gig as with the previous years appearance with Joy Division at the Lyceum was regarded as a success & covered in most uk music mags of the time...Only looking at this today has 'confirmed' it was a bootleg ( I was never really sure..despite being sold 'legally' it seemed to go 'out of site' quite soon after)...

The best vinyl bootleg of their early days. Great performance, great track list. Maybe the vocals are too upfront in the mix, but at least it's from a decent mixing desk recording. Get this and the Philadelphia '81 DVD and you'll have what prime KJ was all about. I'm not joking.
